June 12, 2011, Rikuzentakata, Iwate Pref., Japan - The Ippon Matsu  or solitary pine tree stands alone on the coast of Rikuzentakata. it survived the magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami that devastated the Northeast coast of Japan on March 11, 2011. Hundreds of other nearby pine trees were snapped like toothpicks from the tsunami that wiped out 75% of the homes in the city. ..As a result, this one pine tree has become a symbol of the Japanese strength and spirit in the aftermath of the disasters in northeast Japan..
